Screen Print on Somerset paper
30cm x 76cm
I live in a seaside area of Edinburgh called Portobello. When I had children, I found I was very limited in where I could go and what I could draw - I used to go to far flung places, and now I could barely get out to the shops! But then I remembered a famous quote by the artist William Turner who said 'there's a sketch at every turn'. He meant that inspiration could be found anywhere, and I began to see there were endless subjects right on my doorstep.
This is actually the view from my bedroom window, looking over towards East Lothian. The view is never really the same twice; the light is always changing and sometimes you can see clearly for miles and other times it is very atmospheric and mysterious. I really like the way this could almost be a view in the Scottish Highlands, but it is in fact a view over the old salt pans and rocks in Joppa. It reminds me that unexpected viewpoints are possible everywhere and that things are not always what they seem.
