Screen Print on Somerset paper
38cm x 57cm
A few years ago I visited India and fell in love with the colours, patterns, chaos and charm of the place. I loved the quiet temples, the busy markets, the painted havellis and decorated palaces. I made a lot of paintings and prints from my research when I returned, and am still using some of the information I gathered!
I wanted to make this print mainly because I LOVED the shop's name, 'Kwality Steel'. There were loads of brilliant signs in India, and I couldn't capture them all - we once drove past a sign saying 'New Jeans! Now with 30% Extra Style!!!'. Anyway, the combination of the brilliant name and all the merchandise on offer was too much for me to resist. The stall was in Bikaner's Local Market - this was one of the best markets we visited as it was completely un-touristy at the time and had some amazing stalls which have also appeared in other prints and paintings.
